Summer 2003 - Oregon Coast

2003-08-24: Salmon Netting

The La Conner campground is located on the Indian reservation. We get to use the land but they are the only ones who can fish from shore. We were lucky enough on our last day to experience opening day of seine fishing. It was so interesting watching them pulling in the huge net and in the end seeing all the salmon thrashing about. The Indians picked them up and threw them on a truck with an icebox. How exciting it was to watch. Because our La Conner page was already posted on the website, I'm including this with some of our Oregon photos.

2003-08-24: Spectacular Sunset

I take as many photos of sunsets as I can because I enjoy them so much. This beauty was taken at La Conner the night before we left.

2003-09-03: Cape Lookout

We took the Three Capes scenic drive that took us to three quaint little areas. This view of Cape Lookout is so typical of the Oregon Coast haystack rocks that one can see up and down the coast.

2003-09-03: Cape Meares

Unfortunately when we arrived at Cape Meares we discovered the lighthouse was closed for renovation. The trip was not wasted as witnessed by this view of the coastline along the path to the lighthouse.

2003-09-03: Octopus Tree

A short walk brought us to octopus tree in the old growth forest at Cape Meares. This multiple trunk tree is the result of the effects of the wind and it's location in a hollow.

2003-09-04: Cape Kiwanda

Just down the road from our campground is Cape Kiwanda, the home of the dory fleet. This particular haystack rock is unique because of the handle or bridge to the side. It's always fun to walk the beach here in search of sand dollars and shells.

Our window bird feeder got lots of activity from chickadees, nuthatches and...

2003-09-09: And Jays!

Stellar jays! It took the jays a while to figure out how they too could benefit from the window feeder but figure it out they did. It's so much fun to sit inside and watch the birds at the feeder. We were forced to take our tree feeder down because the squirrels kept chewing the hanger until it fell to the ground.

2003-09-10: Tree Moss

Our trip from the coast inland took us past an area that resembled the rainforest we saw last year on the Olympic Peninsula. I guess from this photo one can assume that it can be pretty wet here in Oregon!
