Mexico's Copper Canyon - Sierra Tarahumara

2007-02-28: Our Cabin

Our accommodations for the next two nights will be in this cabin. Unfortunately the Forest Service is not allowing fires so we won't be able to use our fireplace which would have been nice since it gets cool at night.

2007-02-28: Weavers

There is a Tarahumara village just below us in Urique Canyon. Many of the women spend their days outside the hotel making and selling baskets. We tried to talk to them but evidently they didn't understand us.

2007-03-01: Running Games

The Tarahumara are famous for their long distance running. A popular game among the men is to race through steep canyons kicking a wooden ball for as long as several days. The women play a similar game with rings that they throw using a wooden stick. We had a demonstration of both games though it was shortened considerably!

We boarded our shockless gray schoolbus and headed out to see the sights. Our first stop was at the home of the shaman who told us about his practices through our interpreter, Sergio.
