Our New Abode - Local Fauna

2002-04-14:

Our hummingbird population had a rather slow start but is now very active. We have had three species visit our feeder so far: Ruby throats, Annas and Costas. They are so much fun to watch as they sip, hover and chase one another away from the feeder.

We are truly enjoying the red, yellow and orange house finches which are ravenously eating at the bird feeder. They eat a tubeful of songbird seed a day which is keeping us busy. They are sharing the feeder with sparrows, redwinged blackbirds and grackles. It's rather humorous to watch the grackles and redwinged blackbirds first balance on the feeder perch and then try to turn to eat.

A confused house finch at the hummingbird feeder. Did he really get some syrup??

Turnabout is fair play. On that same day, I captured a hummingbird looking over the tube feeder. Funny how I saw both of these events the same day.

Seed dropped from the feeder does not go to waste as the ducks from our pond come calling to clean up the ground. Here's mama duck and her 11 ducklings heading from the feeder back to the pond.

Sometimes the ducks just perch on our wall and watch the world go by.

We are thrilled that a Ruby Throat hummingbird chose to build her nest outside our spare bedroom window in a place easily viewed from inside the house. She patiently sat on her two eggs for about 2 weeks and presented us with two babies on June 2. We're looking forward to seeing the little ones soon (other than in a mirror held up to the nest when mama was gone).
