2002-07-01: Lava Butte

Lava Butte is an extinct volcanic cone. From the top one has an outstanding view of the Cascades. It was so clear that we could not only see the local mountains but also Mt. Hood.

Ghost trees are a phenomenon that this photographer can't resist. This one remains in the cinders from the volcano.

Looking toward the mountains called sisters from the top of Lava Butte. This is an incredible lava flow.

2002-07-01: Big Deschutes River

We hiked along the Big Deschutes River and saw the other end of the lava flow. When this volcano erupted, the lava flow caused the River to move four miles to the west toward the Cascade Range.

2002-07-01: Benham Falls

Continuing along the river we saw a spectacular scene of untamed rapids. We thought we were going to Benham Falls but we evidently they are misnamed as they are rapids not falls.
