Summer 2002 - From Eastern to Western Washington

2002-07-22: Dust Devil

As we crossed Washington west of Spokane, we were surprised to see so much grain farming. Most is dry farming so much of it had already been harvested. There were many dust devils but this particular one, on a field on the passengers side, looked rather large.

2002-07-22: Crossing The Road

As we rounded a curve we noticed that the car in front of us had slowed down considerably and that this huge dust devil was crossing the highway. Since I didn't have my red heels on, I sure didn't want to be in the middle of it!

2002-07-22: The Story Continues

As it crossed the highway, the dust devil lost much of it's steam and we were able to pass safely.

A bit of Americana deep in the heart of Washington.

2002-07-23: Great Old Barn

Always on the prowl for "good barns" we found this one on one of the back roads leading to Leavenworth. You can't see them, but there are two cars inside growing old with the barn.

2002-07-23: Squirrels In The Birdfeeder!

As always, we hang our water jug bird feeder out when we settle into our space. We also put a pie tin of critter food on the ground for the squirrels, chipmunks and whoever else wants to feast. Here at Leavenworth, once the golden mantle squirrels and chipmunks had emptied the pie tin they decided to attack the bird feeder. Here's the golden mantle filling his cheeks with songbird food.

2002-07-24: Stevens Pass

It was time to move west over the Cascades and head to the coast (and cooler weather). We did this on Route 2 through Stevens Pass which was incredibly beautiful.

2002-07-24: Skiing Anyone?

Upon reaching the summit, we discovered there was a good sized ski area right at the top. I don't think I'd want to drive this road in the winter!
