Summer 2002 - The Redwoods

2002-08-23: Fern Canyon

We were told when we arrived in the Orick area that Fern Canyon was a must see. After driving 8 miles down a gravel road through the redwoods we hiked into the canyon. What we found was indeed something not to be missed when in this area.

2002-08-23: Walls Of Fern

The walls of the canyon stood at least 50 feet high and were covered with 6-8 different species of ferns. We crossed the meandering stream on wooden plank bridges as we made our way up the canyon.

Being close to the ocean, we're experiencing some cooler weather which made the walk in Fern Canyon wonderful.

2002-08-23: Elk In Abundance

We're in an area that is favored by Roosevelt Elk. They are the largest mammals in this year and may exceed 1000 pounds. Their antlers are amazingly large and beautiful. Perhaps this will help to make up for not seeing any moose last year!

2002-08-24: Old Growth Redwoods

Along the 10 mile Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway we were able to view old-growth redwoods up close. Some of the large trees in this forest are more than 1000 years old.

2002-08-24: Stately Giants

These stately giants tower over you as you walk through them. It's interesting how the redwoods seem to grow in a circle around a mother tree.

2002-08-24: Big Tree

Big Tree is definitely an amazing specimen. It was impossible to get the whole tree in the photo so I chose to get the statistics along with my friend. Notice the jacket - we're having some very cool weather - I even have socks on!!
