Summer 2004 - Buffalo, Wyoming

2004-07-03: Crazy Woman Canyon

We were excited to learn that there were some good trails in the Buffalo area. Crazy Woman Canyon winds its way through the Big Horn Mountains. We just love being on the backcountry roads.

2004-07-03: Crazy Woman Creek

It was fun to follow this babbling creek through the canyon. On the trail today we saw antelope as well as a two point buck. Both ran across the road in front of us and gracefully went over a fence.

2004-07-03: More Wildlife??

We both commented about the Open Range sign on the side of the road. Little did we know that we were about to come around a curve and find a herd of cattle occupying our road space. Luckily they moved aside and let us through!

2004-07-03: Lupines

I guess at this altitude the lupines and other wildflowers think it is spring. Our lunch spot was next to a forest with a lupine carpet. This picture really doesn't do it justice but we have the picture in our minds.

2004-07-03: Sheep Mountain

As you can tell from the sky, we ran into some inclement weather as we climbed up Sheep Mountain. We are at about 10,000 feet and the car thermometer is reading 38 degrees. Needless to say we were a bit chilly in our shorts! Those are the Big Horn Mountains behind the jeep.

2004-07-03: Little Sourdough Trail

We went from Sheep Mountain to Little Sourdough, which is at about the same altitude (9000 feet). All of a sudden, the rain turned to hail and the white stuff was not only covering the road and car but all the lupines as well. I guess they're used to this - but we aren't!

2004-07-04: Big Game Preserve

We went off for a short ride in the back country today and ended up in the Bud Love Big Game Winter Range Preserve. This property, once owned by Robert Taylor, a western actor, is the winter range here for elk. Needless to say we didn't see elk but we did see a huge herd of pronghorn and lots of mule deer.
