The backroads beckoned us so off we went. These mountains are the southernmost extension of the Rocky Mountains. They were formed by violent upheavals of the earth's crust.

2005-06-21: Desert In Bloom

The cholla cactus were bursting with color. What a treat! We were lucky we took only a short run today - there was a huge lightning and thunder storm this afternoon. The raindrops were so big we thought for a minute it was hail!

Indian vendors sell their wares here in the plaza everyday. They line up early each morning and are given, for the day, one of the 69 spots by lottery. Their jewelery was beautiful but very expensive.

Built to serve Santa Fe's spanish community, the Romanesque architecture of the cathedral changed Santa Fe's look. It was the first church between Durango, Colorado, Mexico and St. Louis to attain the status of cathedral.

This area of Santa Fe is art gallery after art gallery. We were in awe of this lifesize bronze. At first we thought the blanket was painted material but after talking with the artist we were informed that it was all bronze with the blanket painted and sealed.

2005-06-22: Cristo Rey Church
|
This church, one of the largest adobe structures in the country, contains a hand-carved stone retablo dating from 1761. The nave of the church is 125 feet long, 40 feet wide and 33 feet high - dimensions chosen to provide the perfect setting for this impressive stone altarpiece. It is made of three pieces of easily carved white stone and decorated with impressive representation of various saints, angels, flowers and human heads.
