2005-07-25: Chapel In The Hills

This chapel, nestled in a wooded area in Rapid City, is a copy of the 12th century Borgund Stavkirke (stave church) of Laerdal, Norway. It is adorned with intricate woodcarving and a most peaceful place to visit.

2005-07-25: Mount Rushmore

Seeing Mount Rushmore was high on Chris' list of places to see and Tryna wanted to see the night presentation so we headed off Sunday night to fulfill wishes.

2005-07-25: Noah and Rushmore

We were in awe observing this magnificent sculpture and amazed at how incredible it looked as dusk settled in and lightning began. About 15 minutes before showtime, the ranger came out and announced that two storm cells were colliding above us and for safety reasons the show was being cancelled.

2005-07-26: Custer State Park

Driving through the park on Needles Highway Scenic Drive, we threaded through an area of oddly shaped, weathered granite spires, hairpin curves and narrow tunnels.

2005-07-26: Buffalo Herd

Following the wildlife loop road, we were treated to a wonderful view of part of the huge bison herd here in the park as well as wild turkey and pronghorn antelope.

2005-07-27: 1880 Train

Today we were off for a ride aboard this 19th century train which followed the route that miners and pioneers used to explore the Black Hills. The route included locations used in the filming of Gunsmoke and the TV movie Orphan Train.

2005-07-27: Mount Rushmore At Night

Since the weather was cooperating tonight, we decided to return to Mount Rushmore. It brought goose bumps to our arms as we listened to the national anthem and watched the lights gradually illuminate the monument.

Skyline Drive offers views of the Black Hills and the surrounding prairie as well as passing Dinosaur Park with its seven life-size statues.

2005-07-29: Sylvan Lake

Within the boundaries of Custer State Park we found Sylvan Lake. This 18-acre lake is surrounded by mammoth rock formations that rise from the waters edge. It was a wonderful place for us to have a picnic lunch and for Noah to get in some walking time.

2005-07-29: Double Rainbow

We've had all kinds of weather this week - thunder, lightning, hail and sun. Late this afternoon we had a rainstorm followed by the returning sun that resulted in several rainbows. Among them was this double over our coach - does that mean we have a pot of gold awaiting us somewhere?

Noah went for one last swing before heading for the airport and home. What fun grammy and poppy had this week with Noah and Chris visiting.
