Summer 2005 - Wyoming

2005-07-31: Roughing It

Our first stop in Wyoming was Devils Tower National Monument. Staying in the park under the trees in the shadow of the tower, we roughed it - no electricity or water hookups. Of course dry camping is easy in our home on wheels with its generator.

2005-07-31: Devils Tower

This huge monolith resembles a colossal stone tree stump. It rises 867 feet from its base above the Belle Fourche River. The 1.5-acre top has a growth of sagebrush and grass and the almost perpendicular sides are fluted columns. Watching the rock climbers scale the sides was incredible!

2005-08-02: Shoshone River

After exploring historic downtown Cody with its early 20th century buildings, off we went to discover what natural wonders were in the area. Many of the rafting companies use this section of the Shoshone River as the starting point for their adventures.

2005-08-02: Buffalo Bill Dam

This dam, built in the Shoshone River Canyon, is only 70 feet wide at the original water level. It is definitely the narrowest dam we've ever seen but yet there is a very large the lake behind it!

2005-08-03: Castle Rock

The wide open spaces beckoned us so off we went on the South Fork Road which took us by some huge ranches and amazing rock formations like Castle Rock (one of the few that were actually signed).

2005-08-03: Majestic Beauty

We were in awe of the incredible mountains and formations in this area. What a wonderful place to have lunch al fresco.

2005-08-03: Pronghorn

When you're driving in the backcountry, you never know what you'll see around the next bend. We felt lucky to spot this pronghorn.

3005-08-04: Yellowstone

We headed for Yellowstone early today for a 3-4 day stay. With construction and animal delays, by the time we got to the campgrounds they were filled to capacity. On our drive through the park, we did get to see buffalo (one of our major delays), elk and lots of fumeroles with a heavy sulphur smell. Being flexible, we just moved on to Idaho and some new country.
