2005-08-21: Island Fair

We couldn't resist going to the Island Fair on Whidbey Island and are we ever glad we went. Since the Pacific Northwest is "logging country" they had great logging events that we had never experienced before. Here you see a tree climber going up a pole that had to be over 80 feet tall. The object was to get to the top and ring the bell in the fastest time. We couldn't believe how some of the climbers ran up the pole!

2005-08-21: Log Rolling

And then there were the log rollers. These two were professionals - she is a three-time champion as was her mother and her grandmother before her. Obviously these events are now just a sport since the logging operations have been mechanized. What fun to watch!

2005-08-22: Our Site

We lucked out this year and got what we think is the best campsite in this park. This is the view of the site with my back to the water...

2005-08-23: Seine Fishing

The La Conner campground is on the Swinomish Reservation. This is seine fishing season so we got to watch as they net fished salmon. It was fun to watch but was hard work for them.

2005-08-24: Campfire Sing-A-Long

Our friends Barbara and Jim came up in their camper and spent the week with us. We had a great time taking the ferry to the islands together, watching sunsets and enjoying campfire time. Though Jim has played the guitar for years and Al is just a novice, we had fun at a campfire sing-a-long.

2005-08-27: Saturday Market

We love going to the farmers markets and checking out the local goods. Al is checking out these orangy colored beets and holding the bunch of basil we bought. Basil seemed to be the herb of the week (reasonable and fragrant).

2005-08-29: Sunset

We have had incredible sunsets every night since we're here. We usually sit outside and watch the sun go down and then have a fire or go inside, cuddle up and read. What a life!

2005-08-31: Victoria

We decided to try something we've never done before. We went as foot passengers on the ferry from Anacortes to Sidney, BC, Canada and then took a public bus to Victoria. What a wonderful day we had walking around this picturesque city. Here Al is in one of the many little park/gardens we found.

2005-08-31: Sunset

Our perfect day was made even more perfect when we were treated to this wonderful sunset on our way home on the ferry. This is a trip we'll repeat another time.
