We finally spent some time in Seaside which is Oregon's largest and oldest ocean resort. It lies at the end of the Lewis and Clark trail.

2005-09-12: Merry-Go-Round

This carousel reminded me of the one I used to ride in West Haven, Connecticut. It too was at the beach (Long Island Sound) but is now at Magic Mountain in Valencia, California.

2005-09-12: The Beach

It was fun to walk the promenade that goes along the beach from one end of town to the other. At the southern end of town was Tillamook Head and the Tillamook Head Lighthouse out on its own island.

2005-09-13: Cannon Beach

This small beach town was named for the cannon that washed ashore from a schooner shipwrecked in 1846. We decided this would be an ideal place to enjoy another sunset.

2005-09-13: Reflection

We strolled along the beach looking for treasures as we watched the sun drop to the west. This photo of the sun's reflection on the water was too good not to share.

2005-09-13: Moon Rise

As the sun was setting over the ocean the moon was rising above the coastal range behind us. The colors showing on these mountains were as pretty as the sun setting in front of us.

2005-09-13: Haystack Rock

Here at Cannon Beach is one of the world's largest monoliths, Haystack Rock. If you look closely to the left of Haystack and in between the next two rock formations, you can just see Tillamook Head Light.

2005-09-17: Covered Bridge

We have been coming to Oregon since the early 1980's but have never before seen a covered bridge here. The Chitwood bridge, which crosses the Yaquina River, is 96 feet long and was built in 1926.

We followed the river along a dirt road to Elk City.

2005-09-18: Path

The path through the woods to the beach is just across from our campsite. The picture makes it look a lot spookier than it is! It's really an easy walk to the beach access across Highway 101.

2005-09-18: Skeleton

Walking along the beach across from our campground just south of Newport we came discovered this old boat skeleton. We imagine it has many stories to tell!

2005-09-19: Hatfield Marine Science Center

Today we visited the Hatfield Science Center which is part aquarium, part science center and part laboratory. Part of Oregon State University, this facility is dedicated to showcasing scientific explorations. We had so much fun at the tidepool exhibits where we could touch the urchins, anemones, starfish and skates.

2005-09-19: Yaquina Head Lighthouse

This historic lighthouse was completed in 1873 and has been called one of the most beautiful lighthouses in America. It was first lit on August 20, 1873 and has stayed continuously lit since. At 96 feet, it is the tallest lighthouse in the state.

2005-09-19: Fresnel Lens

Since it was a mild sunny day, I decided I would climb the 110 stairs and see the lens that makes it possible for ships to see the light some 20 miles out to sea. Believe it or not, I made it to the top (with minimal huffing and puffing) and saw this beauty firsthand.

2005-09-19: Waves

Although the day was sunny and mild, the sea was rough. This helped to give us a good show as the waves broke on the rocks that make up the head.

2005-09-19: Whales

Not only did we get to see an incredible lighthouse and climb to the top but we were also treated to the antics of a pair of grey whales just off shore. We watched as they spouted and sounded (tails out of the water). What a day!
