Summer 2005 - Kings Canyon National Park

2005-10-12: Chicago Stump

This is the stump that was left after this 3200 year-old giant sequoia was brought down, cut in sections, hollowed out some and shipped to the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair in an effort to share this amazing giant sequoia with visitors. All the work and expense was in vain as viewers of the reassembled tree called it a hoax!

2005-10-12: Mountain Gooseberry

Along the trail to Chicago Stump we found these interesting berries with stickers. Al thought they were some kind of gooseberry. When we asked the ranger he told us they were indeed mountain gooseberries.

2005-10-12: General Grant

The General Grant Tree is the third largest of known sequoias. It is 267 feet high with a circumference of 107.6 feet. One feels rather small standing by this majestic giant.

2005-10-12: Fallen Monarch

Even down these incredible trees are awesome. You can actually walk through this tree as the trunk is hollowed out. The tree to our right is the General Lee.

2005-10-13: Grizzly Falls

We were amazed that the waterfalls here in the valley were still flowing as vigorously as this.

2005-10-13: Kings River

The Kings River, which meandered through the valley, was clear, cold and beautiful. In many places it was calm while in others there was white water rushing over the boulders.

Another incredible waterfall!

2005-10-13: Junction View

It was interesting to see the canyon that the river carved. At one viewpoint we could actually see two canyons carved by the Kings River as it made its way to the valley.

2005-10-15: Our Boy

We were greeted by our darling Noah upon our arrival home. We had an incredible 4-months but it is good to be home and especially good to be able to interact with our little munchkin. At almost 2 he is on the run and talking up a storm - sometimes even in short sentences. We enjoyed spending the weekend with Noah and his dad but now have to direct our energies to emptying the motorhome and beginning plans on our next trip!
