2006-06-02: Horse and Cart
We arrived early in the day and decided to get a feel for the town by taking the horse cart guided tour. Since they were opening the season this weekend, the tours were free! Not only did we get to see Dawson Creek but we also got a flavor of the city's historical, vibrant and rather quirky past.

2006-06-02: Alaska Hotel
The Alaska Hotel was originally a 6-room hotel and in 1942 became licensed to sell alcohol. In the 1940's the beer parlor was so busy that lines stretched around the building and customers were allowed in for one drink and then forced to go out to the end of the line.

2006-06-02: Pioneer Village
This historic village depicts Dawson Creek before the Alaska Highway and at a time the community was at the edge of the frontier. Here we saw furnished pioneer buildings as well as vintage cars and farm machinery.

2006-06-03: Alaska Highway Southern Terminus
Every traveler must have a photo standing under the famous sign at the beginning of the Alaska Highway and we're no different! Behind us is a grain elevator that has been turned into a wonderful art gallery that houses not only the works of local artists but also an impressive photo exhibit of the building of the Alaska Highway.

2006-06-03: Mile 0 Post
And then of course, one must also do a photo op at the Mile 0 cairn in the center of town! The original marker was wooden and was stolen by Halloween pranksters and replaced with an outhouse. This post is metal and is bolted in place!

2006-06-03: Building Murals
Throughout this small city there are many wonderful, historic murals on the sides of the buildings. This is one of Main Street as it was in 1946. Notice how the telephone pole is painted to blend in with the mural.

2006-06-03: Under The Willows Tea Room
Lunch today was not only delicious but a highlight. At Under the Willows, Karen, the owner, welcomed us. The Milepost said we would be able to eat "homemade soups, scrumptious sandwiches and healthy and hearty world-famous carrot cake". We had that and more. After serving us, Karen picked up her guitar and entertained us. This tiny gem was a find!
