Summer 2006 - To The Alaska Border

2006-06-07: Alaska Highway

I guess because we're still early in the season, we have the Alaska Highway almost to ourselves. We were crossing to check out an old log cabin when I caught Barb and Al fooling around in the middle of the highway.

2006-06-07: Teslin Lake

Our stop tonight is at a Yukon Territory Government Park on Teslin Lake. We have an incredible space overlooking this huge lake (86 miles long and 2 miles wide) with the snow-capped mountains in the background. This is paradise!

2006-06-07: Lake

That's Al down there checking out the lake. It was warm and sunny today so we got to shed our jackets for a while.

2006-06-07: Fire Time

Al got out his trusty hatchet to split wood for our fire. These government campgrounds are only $12 a night and firewood is free!

2006-06-08: Miles Canyon

We arrived in Whitehorse today, our first big city since leaving. We quickly took care of chores (laundry and shopping) and then explored the city. After dinner, we took a ride out to Miles Canyon.

2006-06-08: Suspension Bridge

I'm not sure how we did it, but we got Barb to cross the canyon on the suspension bridge (she's not fond of heights). It was fun watching the boats scoot down the canyon.

2006-06-09: Fox Lake

I had seen a photo of this lake in the Yukon brochure and decided it had to be on our itinerary. Once again we're staying at a government park and as you can see, we overlook the lake. It was a great place to kick back, read and for Al to carve.

2006-06-09: Sorta' Sunset

It kind of clouded over in the early evening and then around 10:45 the sun which was still pretty high in the sky poked out and gave us an interesting view.

2006-06-10: Braeburn Lake

We met Carl and Leona from El Cajon who also like to jeep so we went off looking for an adventure. Didn't exactly find an adventure but did fine Braeburn Lake where Carl decided to ford the river. The Liberty just didn't have high enough clearance for this river.

2006-06-10: Wading

2006-06-10: Fox Lake

This was the view of Fox Lake Campground that I saw in the brochure that made me want to come here. I'm sure glad we followed my instincts.

2006-06-11: Burl

We spent the night in the hamlet of Kluane and took the opportunity to visit a local artist who works with burls from local trees. George was quite a character and took the time to show us the process of going from an ugly burl to a beautiful bowl.

2006-06-12: Ice Field Ranges

The Ice Field Ranges include the highest and youngest mountains in Canada. This is the largest non-polar ice field in North America and sends long glacial fingers into the valleys between the peaks.

2006-06-12: We Have Arrived

After probably the worst roads since we began this trip, we crossed the border into Alaska. What a great feeling!
