2008-08-26: Lone Pine
|
This Thousand Trails campground is on an Indian Reservation on the Puget Sound north of Seattle. We have been coming here since the early 80's and have probably taken this same photo of "lone pine" every time we've been here.

2008-08-27: Cabbage Seed Farm
|
Our friends the Gilbertson's from California were here when we arrived. It was fun going on adventures with them. On our day trip today Clare spotted a working planting machine in a field so we decided to investigate. We were on a cabbage seed farm and the farmer was machine planting cabbage seedlings for next year. We were very surprised to hear that there were girl and boy plants (they were identified by pink and blue) and that the heads of cabbage (boy plants) were useless since this farmer was selling the seeds (the girl plants). The farmer said we could have all the cabbage we wanted!

2008-08-27: Blau Oyster Farm
|
Our next stop was an oyster farm on the Sammish Bay. We were given a tour and were surprised to learn that here in Washington you can actually own the tidelands. This particular farm has been planting and harvesting oysters very successfully since the early 30's from their bay.

2008-08-31: Clamming
|
...we met this Indian getting his daily take of butter clams. He told us that he has to let the council know about how many clams he is going to take out every time he comes clamming. Since we are on the reservation, we are not allowed to remove anything from the beach (this includes driftwood, shells, stones, clams) nor can we fish from the beach. I can forgo taking a piece of driftwood home with me for the privilege of enjoying this beauty.

Saw this tree and realized that fall is in the air up here. Although the temperature during the day is in the high 60's/low 70's, the nights have been as low as the 40's!

Today found us on the Keystone ferry that took us from Whidby Island to Port Townsend. Our friend Barbara sells her paper beads at the market so we first went to see her and take in the rest of the things there such as this weaver that was busy at work.

On the ferry returning to Whidby Island, the captain took a slight detour so we could see this gem up close. They even fired their canon when we got close (of course it was all noise and no ball!).

2008-09-10: Berry Picking
|
We have been enjoying blackberries since our arrival. We've had them in cobbler, with cream and yesterday we canned 12 jars of jam. Since we're leaving tomorrow, Al decided he better pick one more time so we can indulge tonight and for the next few days. Not only do we have the best sunset views from this space but as you can see, we have lots of berries right out our door.
