Summer 2008 - Washington and Oregon Coasts

2008-09-15: Ocean Shores, Washington

This campground is just a short path through the sand dunes to the beach. On our way to catch a sunset, we passed this structure put together with flotsam and jetsam (debris washed up on shore). We are thinking they take everything off at the beginning of each season to allow visitors to decorate it with stuff they find while beachcombing.

2008-09-17: Seaside, Oregon

Seaside was Oregon's first seashore resort. Dating from the 1920's, Seaside's oceanfront promenade and car turnaround are among Oregon's most famous landmarks. This year these unique starfish lights are a welcome addition.

2008-09-17: Giraffe Tree

We discovered our first giraffe tree in La Conner years ago. This year we've found another one but this one seems to be a laying down giraffe. We'll have to watch this one as we have the other one.

2008-09-18: Cannon Beach

This town was named for a cannon that washed up on the beach in 1846. Haystack Rock is part of Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and the unofficial symbol of Cannon Beach.

2008-09-18: Pelicans

We took a little side street and headed toward the water where we were rewarded with the antics of about 30 pelicans. They are so much fun to watch.

2008-09-18: Tillamook Rock Lighthouse

1.2 miles out into the sea stands Tillamook Lighthouse which is nicknamed "Terrible Tilly" because of its exposure to storm waves. Today it is the only privately owned coast lighthouse on the National Register of Historic Places and was once used as a columbarium, a storage place for ashes of the deceased.

2008-09-19: Reflection

We went to The Cove in south Seaside where we saw this incredible reflection of a man and his puppy (who seemed to be chasing his reflection)...

2008-09-20: Youngs River Falls

We found a notation on a map about Youngs River Falls so we decided to see if we could find it. Off we went and find it we did. Patrick Gass from Lewis and Clark's expedition found this waterfall in 1806. He described it as "60 feet of a pendicular pitch". It really was a pretty waterfall.

2008-09-20: Kites

There were some great kites being flown at the beach. These huge ones even had spinners attached to their strings as well as a smaller kite instead of a tail.

2008-09-20: Raccoon

We returned to camp and were lucky enough to spot this huge raccoon coming out of the trees toward us. This is the first time we've seen a raccoon so up close and personal. It's funny because when we were in Cannon Beach the other day we spotted a whole raccoon family trying to cross the street. We always thought they were nocturnal so were surprised to see them at all.

2008-09-21: Astoria

A stop in northern Oregon isn't complete without a trip to Astoria, the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies. Here we enjoyed the Sunday Market...

2008-09-21: Sea Lions

...and this pod of sea lions who have taken over several of the docks here in Astoria. According to what we were told, these are bachelor sea lions who were rejected in California during mating season and have come up here to lick their wounds.

2008-09-21: Lunch Spot

We were told to try the fish and chips at the Bowpicker. This was indeed a unique "restaurant" with wonderful fish and chips. While there we met locals that told us that we had indeed found the right place.
