2008-09-22: Sunset
Haystack Rock in Cape Kiwanda made a great setting for this beautiful sunset.

2008-09-23: Three Cape Loop
Today we decided to drive part of the Three Capes Loop. We stopped just above Cape Lookout for this incredible view toward Cape Meares and 3-Arch Rock.

2008-09-23: Netarts
Netarts Bay was bustling with boats heading in and out with crab pots or fishermen. All the boaters we talked to said the catch was good.

2008-09-23: Oceanside
We heard that Oceanside was known for its hang gliding but since this was a weekday we didn't get to see any. We did drive up the stair stepped little streets to the very top of the ridge and then back down to the ocean. This is a very cute, eclectic community.

2008-09-23: Cape Meares Light
Cape Meares Lighthouse, Oregon's shortest lighthouse, stands 38-feet atop Cape Meares and 217 feet above the ocean. The lamp in this lighthouse was first lit in 1890. In 1963, the stubby, stalwart lighthouse was decommissioned.

2008-09-23: Lens
It was amazing standing in the tower right next to the first order, eight-sided Fresnel lens that was hand ground in 1887 by Henry LePaute in Paris. This is the largest and most powerful of the six Fresnel types. It was shipped around Cape Horn, then north to Cape Mears where workers lifted the one-ton lens parts up and over the cliff using a hand-operated crane made from local spruce trees.

2008-09-23: Three Arch Rock
It wasn't until we saw the rocks from this vantagepoint that we realized that there are indeed arches in all three formations. From Cape Lookout, we could only see one.

2008-09-23: Munson Creek Falls
At 319 feet, Munson Creek Falls is the highest on the coast. While hiking the 1/4 mile to the waterfall, we got to see the world's tallest Sitka spruce. It is 260 feet tall and 8 feet in diameter. I tried to get a photo but just couldn't get enough of it.

2008-09-23: Another Beach
Another beach, maybe another sunset. Here in the Pacific City area there are many sand dunes that are fun to walk and photograph.

2008-09-23: Illusions
This was a very strange sunset though I'm not sure you'll be able to see what we saw. Because of the clouds, this gave the illusion of a city on the other side of the water turning on its lights as dusk came upon it. What we actually saw was the sun peeking under the clouds that evidently weren't right to the water.

2008-09-23: Mushroom
On the way back to camp we got to see a great horned owl - I couldn't get a photo but we had a good look. Coming into camp we stopped to get a photo of this mushroom that was growing in one of the campsites. Don't know what kind it is but it sure was huge!

2008-09-23: Deer
When the rain let up for a bit, Al went out to carve. All of a sudden he heard a noise, looked up and right there before him was a doe and her twins. They were evidently not at all skittish because they were quite content to continue eating berries while not 6-feet from Al. They didn't even leave when he got up to get me out of the coach where I was sewing. This has definitely been a trip for wildlife.

2008-09-24: Cape Kiwanda Headland
The headland is a state natural area. The action of the wind and waves on the sandstone that forms the cape has created this interesting headland. It is beautiful to look at from the beach but dangerous to explore on foot. Today we got to see it in the rain.
