2009-04-22: Abdij

Today the abbey complex is the seat of the provincial government of Zeeland. The medieval abbey was founded in 1120 by St. Norbet. The town of Middleburg is centered around the abbey.

This view of the town hall belfry from a distance gives one an idea of how distinctive it is. It stands 180 feet high.

2009-04-22: Town Hall

Overlooking the main square stands this imposing building which was begun in 1452 by two members of the Kelderman family from Belgium. On the first floor, between the original gothic windows, are niches where in the 19th century statues were added.

2009-04-22: Tulips

A shop on the square was selling these beautiful tulips. I never knew that you can put a tulip bud in water and over time it will blossom. Here in the states we only think of them as one of the first spring flowers.

Just like on the big cruise ships, we often came back to our cabin and were greeted by shapes made from towels.
