Summer 2009 - La Conner and Surrounding Area

2009-07-12: La Conner Channel

The picturesque fishing port of La Conner, which is on the Swinomish Channel dates back to the founding of a trading post in 1868. Rainbow Bridge is always fun to photograph but was especially interesting today with a tug bringing a log raft down the channel to the local mill.

2009-07-12: Owl

We had to laugh when we saw this fake owl which is supposed to discourage birds from nesting with a swallows nest on his head. Guess it didn't work!

2009-07-13: Campfire

Nothing like a nice campfire and uke practice. Yup I have my own little instrument and am attempting to learn some chords.

2009-07-13: Heron

Waiting for the sun to set we spotted a few herons at waters edge fishing.

2009-07-13: Flight

A dog came along, scared the heron into flight. We also saw bald eagles fishing which was pretty exciting.

And more incredible.

2009-07-15: Carving

Al is finding time to relax and carve. I also did some sewing but we lost those photos when my SD card decided to die.

2009-07-17: Campfire

We attended the campfire and were enjoying Amy's singing. Al commented when she played an Iz rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow that she was using a ukulele strum at which point she told him to get his uke. He played 3 songs while she harmonized in front of a crowd of people!

2009-07-17: Lone Pine at Sunset

Lone Pine stands out on a small island here in the campground and is probably one of the most photographed trees in this area.

2009-07-18: Ship Wreck Flea Market

Anacortes held its annual ship wreck flea market today. They closed the main street to traffic and opened it to vendors to sell their wares. Many of the local philanthropic organizations had booths with the hope of raising funds for their cause.

2009-07-18: Ready - Set - Kaboom

The flea market was followed by work boat races. It too had a pirate theme.

2009-07-18: Parade

First came the parade of boats complete with the fireboat (which later raced in the large boat category).

2009-07-18: Cannon

Each race started and ended with the firing of cannons. Believe me, it made a huge KABOOM! In the background is the winner of the medium workboat category.

2009-07-18: Race

And they're off! Each category of boats (there were three) took off down Guemes Channel for about 1-1/2 miles, went around the buoy and then back to the starting point where the first boat in got the checkered flag. It was fun to watch but not terribly nail-biting exciting!

2009-07-18: Tall Ship

This tall ship showed up during the large boat category. I guess it was in the area and came to see what all the noise was about.
