2009-10-05: Florence, Oregon
|
We stayed at the Elks campground in Florence. We had a huge, private site so decided to enjoy the sun and get some sewing and carving done. Every now and again it's nice to have some down time!

The sunset here at the end of the jetty was incredible but let me tell you, it was windy and cold watching it!

2009-10-06: Reward
|
It was laundry day today and that always calls for a reward. We went to old town and ate fish and chips at ICM (International C-Food Market). It was so delightful sitting out on the deck overlooking the harbor.

2009-10-06: Bridge
|
I guess this is our summer to highlight bridges. Although this is not a McCullough Bridge spanning the Siuslaw River it is a beauty.

2009-10-06: Darlingtonia
|
These cobra-like, insect eating plants that grow in boggy areas of Southern Oregon and Northern California are called darlingtonia. The darlingtonia lures insects into the leaf opening under the hood. Once inside, the insect becomes confused and eventually gets trapped, digested and absorbed as food through the plants thin lower walls.

2009-10-06: Mercer Lake
|
On the way back to camp we decided to see what Mercer Lake looked like (the campground was on Mercer Lake Road). We were very surprised to find a beautiful, large, fingered lake with private docks. This too was a great place to catch a sunset.

2009-10-08: Old 101
|
We decided to explore the road to Carpenterville which is part of old Highway 101. It was a curvy, narrow road - great for traveling in the jeep but would have been hairy in the motorhome!

2009-10-08: Cypress Rock

The erosive power of wind and waves constantly sculpt these fantastic formations. The way the sun was hitting the water made it sparkle!

2009-10-08: Arch Rock

Sediment in the water constantly grinds against the rocks slowly breaking them down. Notches form and enlarge into sea caves and eventually into arches like this one.

2009-10-08: House Rock

This was supposed to look like a house on top of the rock formation. I sure didn't get it but it did look pretty cool with the fog around it!

2009-10-09: Pink Lady
|
This Queen Anne Eastlake Victorian called the Pink Lady was also built by Carson. It was his wedding present to his son. According to what we read, it was called the Carson House and painted pink to contrast with the duller color of the Carson Mansion across the street.

2009-10-09: Carter House Inns
|
There is an enclave of four magnificent Victorians perched along Humboldt Bay Road. The Carter House was actually built in 1997 using plans from the 1885 Murphy House located in San Francisco until it burned down. Of the four buildings, two are from the 1800's and two are more recently built in the Victorian style.

I have no story for this wonderful Victorian except that it caught my eye and just had to be included here. I love the round window in the front.
