Summer 2010 - Cheyenne, Wyoming

2010-07-00: Birthday

In honor of Paula's birthday, we had "make you own sundaes". We started outside but raindrops chased us inside our coach. Can you believe we fit 9-people in our little coach!

2010-07-00: Carriage Ride

Today found us taking a carriage ride through town. The carriage was pulled by these two beautiful Belgians who moved when Steve, the driver, said "step up girls".

2010-07-03: Union Pacific Depot

The Union Pacific Depot is a symbol of the deep connection between Cheyenne and the railroad. Built in 1886 and designed in Richardsonian Romanesque style, it is constructed from polychromatic sandstone that was quarried in Fort Collins, Colorado. It really is one of the most beautiful depots we've ever seen.

2010-07-03: Boots

All around town one can find these giant cowboy boots that have been decorated by local artists. This one stands across the street from the big Wrangler store that has been on that corner for years.

This "junk" horse designed and built by a local artist stands in the park near the depot.

2010-07-03: Governor's Mansion

This distinguished mansion was built in 1905 and designed by Charles Murdock. It was modern for its time because of its central plumbing, hot water heat and combination gas and electrical fixtures. Nellie Taloe Ross, the first woman governor in the US was one of the residents of this stately mansion. Here Augie and Al check out the old RCA TV.

2010-07-03: Sanford's

We all had lunch at Sanford's which is not only an eatery but also somewhat of an attraction. It's decor is antique-ish with everything from bicycles to auto parts to pictures to gasoline signs hung everywhere - even from the ceiling.

2010-07-03: Trolley

We all boarded the Cheyenne Trolley after lunch for a tour of the city. Our driver-tour guide Val, a long time resident of Cheyenne, gave us lots of information about the city and even some inside info about some of the wonderful old houses.

2010-07-03: State Capitol

Our tour made a quick stop at the Capitol Building. Standing proudly in front of the building is a bronze of Esther Morris, a pioneer for women's suffrage in Wyoming and a former justice of the peace. According to our guide, Wyoming was the first place in the US that women got to vote.

2010-07-04: Capitol Avenue

Going down Capitol Avenue we just clip-clopped along while Steve gave us some history. In this layback town there doesn't seem to be a care or worry about a horse drawn carriage slowing traffic down!

2010-07-04: Independence Day

Our July 4th BBQ had to be moved indoors because of rain. Deanna and Frank offered the use of their patriotically decorated coach. While we were eating, the rain (and hail) came down so hard that we could hardly hear each other talk. Due to the weather, we decided not to attend the city fireworks display but some of us did stand outside for a while in the cold (55-degrees) after the rain stopped and watched the colors in the sky.

2010-07-05: Gunslinger Show

Tonight we went back downtown to see the gunslinger show put on by the local gun club. It was a bit predictable but very western.
