2012-08-13: Sand Dunes

As we got closer to the tip of the peninsula we began to see glorious sand dunes. We commented that about 45-years ago a group of us went to the Cape for the weekend and the girls climbed to the top of a dune like this one. I certainly would not make it today!

2012-08-13: Wood End Lighthouse

Cape Cod juts over seventy miles into the Atlantic Ocean making it an obstacle to navigation. During the past 300 years, there have been over 3,000 shipwrecks along the outer shore. Lighthouses are meant to warn mariners away from this "ocean graveyard". Wood End Lighthouse was built in 1873 and is located toward the end of the breakwater at the tip of the Cape.

Provincetown was the site of the first landing of the Pilgrims It is isolated at the tip of Cape Cod. The settlement always depended on the sea for its livelihood though today it is now an art colony and tourist mecca. Its narrow streets are hard to navigate because of all the foot and bicycle traffic.

2012-08-13: Non-Tourist Tour

We visited our friends Margaret and Vic at their home in West Barnstable. After catching up a bit, we took off in their car for what Vic promised to be "interesting places the tourists don't go". Our first stop was the West Barnstable beach. With their resident sticker, we didn't have to pay the $20 parking fee that has been plaguing us.

2012-08-14: Cape Cod Canal

The canal was originally opened in 1914 under private ownership in an effort to create a toll shipping route that did not require going all the around the tip of Cape Cod. This effort failed miserably. In the early 1930's, the Corp of Engineers took the project over and made the canal both wider and deeper. By 1940, reconstruction was complete and the toll-free canal was reopened. The Cape Cod Canal is the widest sea level canal in the world.

It seemed like every corner we turned brought another incredible sight into view. These moors were between the mainland and small Shaw Island. The mansions on this island were something to behold.

2012-08-14: St Andrews Church

Sitting on top of a hill overlooking the moors and Nantucket Sounds stands St. Andrews Church. The church was built in 1906 and until recently didn't even have electricity and still is not heated. The church is only open for 3-months during the summer but according to Vic has plenty of money.
