Salt On The Road
A Travel Photo - Journal Of Tryna and Al Morton

Summer 2015 - Monroe, Washington

2015-07-21: Curves

Al always finds us the most scenic routes as we move from place to place. Since we don't usually travel more then 200 miles in a day, we tend to use the roads less traveled.

2015-07-22: Makin' Music

Al always seems to draw a crowd when he takes his uke outside to practice. He even had a man come over and ask if he could try playing it!

2015-07-23: Skykomish River

It's an easy walk down to the beach since our campsite is right above the river.

2015-07-24: Thumbnail Theater

Tim Noah, the founder of the Thumbnail Theater in Snohomish feels that the world should be a place where the joy of self-expression, respect, peace and empowerment are freely demonstrated through the performing arts. For this reason he bought and restored an old church and started the Thumbnail Theater, a venue for performances, classes and every Friday night an open mic activity. Performers of all ages share their songs, music, stories or poetry with a very supportive audience. Al chose not to perform this year but we certainly enjoyed being entertained.

2015-07-24: Sally and I

Sally and I went to high school together in Milford, Connecticut and reconnected about six years ago. We certainly enjoy our time together when we come up here in the summer and when they sometimes come south during the winter.

Sally, a farmer at heart, has a huge garden with raised beds. I always enjoy being on the receiving end of her produce.

2015-07-25: Wake Surfing

We had read in the paper that the International Wake Surfing Competition was being held on Lake Tye here in town so off we went today to find out exactly what wake surfing is and how it's done. After talking to several of the pro's who were competing, we found it to be a water sport in which a surfer trails behind a wakeboard boat and surfs the wake without being directly pulled by the boat. The wake, from the boat which is a ski tow boat heavily modified to throw a wave-shaped wake, mimics the look and feel of an actual ocean wave.

2015-07-25: Wake Riding

After getting up on the wave by use of a tow rope, wakesurfers drop the rope, and ride the steep face below the wave's peak in a fashion reminiscent of ocean surfing. Wakesurfers generally use special boards, usually five feet or shorter. We were amazed at the tricks they were able to do!

2015-07-25: Blackberries

Because it's been so warm here in the Pacific Northwest, the blackberries are ready early. Al went off to pick while I researched a new way to use them.

2015-07-25: Zucchini Blackberry Nut Bread

Wanting to use some of Sally's fresh veggies I decided to try making a zucchini blackberry nut bread to go with the soup I was making with more fresh veggies and herbs in it. I have to say, my experiment turned out well.
