2015-09-17: Vaux's Swift

Thousands of Vaux's Swifts return to this decommissioned brick chimney at Wagner School here in Monroe every October during their annual migration. They enter the chimney for the night just before dark at the rate of up to 50 birds per second. Nearly 1-million swift roostings were documented here from 2008-2010. Swifts spend more of their lives in the air than any other land bird and roost in large numbers during migration so they can share body heat. It's quite an amazing sight to see them circling the chimney and then diving in for the night in large groups.

2015-09-18: Open Mic

We went to Tim Noah's Thumbnail Theater in Snohomish so Al could participate in their Open Mic event. It's always fun for him to perform in front of different audiences.

2015-09-18: Veggies

My friend Sally who lives in Snohomish has an incredible house in the forest among the ferns and the pines. She has a huge cleared area for her garden which produces the most delicious veggies. Every summer when we get together, I am the recipient of bags full of bounty from the garden. This is just a bit of what she gave me this time. Thanks Sally.

2015-09-19: Agility Event

Driving around town today we decided to check out a park we had never seen and came upon an AKC Agility qualifying event. It was interesting watching the owners lead their dogs through the course of jumps and pole weavings. We stopped to talk to one lady who had just finished the course with her sheltie only to find out that the dog had been a grand champion at Westminister!

2015-09-19: Obstacle Course

The other part of the competition was an obstacle course that included tunnels, elevated walking ramps, tire jumps and even a teeter-totter. I could so see our La Conner friend's dog Goodboy competing in this event!

2015-09-20: Spider Web

This spider decided to build his web and take up residence just outside our door. I hope he gets plenty to eat before tomorrow as his web will be destroyed when we pull in our slide in the morning.
