2016-06-18: Window View
|
We were so lucky to have friends in Coupeville on Whidbey Island who were willing to take us in while our coach was being fixed and we were homeless. This was our view from our room.

This bald eagle perched in their neighbors tree almost every day we were there. I guess this must have been a good place for him to spot his next meal.

This morning was Rudy's food bank volunteer day so we tagged along to help. Al and Rudy spent the time sorting out canned goods while Tryna helped bag the fresh produce donated by some of the local farms.

We had a beautiful view of Hurricane Ridge on the Olympic Peninsula as the sun set tonight. It was fun seeing the cruise ships as they made their way to and from Alaska as well as the barges, tugs and beautiful private yachts as they sailed past us.

2016-06-23: Mukilteo Lighthouse
|
The Mukilteo Lighthouse was built in 1906 of wood while most other lighthouses of the era were constructed using brick and concrete. It is 38-feet tall and was automated in 1979. The lighthouse continues as an operational navigation aid on the east side of Possession Sound which is where our ferry from the island docked.

2016-06-23: Restoration Museum
|
Our first stop at Boeing Field was the restoration museum. Al was pretty excited about seeing the 1959 De Havilland DH-106 Comet 4C that they're restoring because his father actually worked on these. We were actually able to go into this plane which was pretty cool.

2016-06-23: Boeing Tour
|
The Boeing Everett assembly plant is one of the largest buildings in the world and employs some 41,000 people. We were told that the huge buildings are not heated or cooled but rather had been designed with huge doors that could be opened to help maintain the temperature level inside.

It was fascinating to watch 747s, 777s and 787s being built before our eyes. The facility has a runway where we actually watched the test run of a new ANA Dreamliner.

|
As we were taking a tour of Ebey's Landing, an area on the island that preserves the historical, agricultural and cultural traditions of both native and Euro-American cultures, we got to see majestic Mt. Baker, covered in snow, popping through the clouds.

|
Anacortes has many public areas, some of which afford incredible views. One of these is Mt. Erie where one is able to see parts of Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands as well as some of the San Juans. We love this view of Campbell Lake that shows an island on a lake on an island!

2016-06-24: Story Pole
|
This Samish story pole at Rosario Beach in the Deception Pass area depicts a guardian sea spirit and reminds observers that for centuries the Samish and Swinomish lived and fished in this area. The Maiden of Deception Pass, Ko Kwal Al Woot was a beautiful Samish Indian girl living in a village at this site. She was gathering seafood one day when a young man from beneath the sea saw her and fell in love. This man of the sea asked her father for her hand in marriage but he refused for fear she would drown. The young man warned him that the seafood would disappear unless she married him. Thus her father agreed to the marriage.

As much as we enjoyed our B & B on the island, it is really nice to be back in our own house on wheels at our favorite Thousand Trails campground. I love watching the blue herons, the eagles flying by and the seals bobbing up and down out our front window...
