2016-07-15: Uke

The ache in his arm doesn't seem to be effecting Al's ability to strum his uke but it has curtailed his carving.

2016-07-16: Friends

We had a wonderful visit with Bill Byers and his nephew Rick from Connecticut who were in the area for a wedding. Bill stood up for Al 50-years ago when we got married and I remember Ricky from my first year of teaching as a scrawny little kid!

2016-07-17: Coast Road

Al is insistent that we continue our trip south on Hwy 101, the coast road. We love this highway and hope we can continue south using the scenic route.

2016-07-17: Ship Wreck

Nothing is known about this PT Boat wreck near Dismal Nitch along the Columbia River. The only thing I could find was that perhaps it was brought here to be broken up into scrap metal and then just left. It does make a good picture though!

2016-07-17: Astoria-Megler Bridge

The Astoria-Megler Bridge stretches some 4.1 miles across the mouth of the Columbia River. Prior to its completion in 1966, one had to board a ferry to cross the river. The bridge was built to withstand 150 mph wind gusts and river water speeds of 9 mph.

2016-07-18: Tillamook Rock Lighthouse

Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, nicknamed Terrible Tilly, was completed in 1891 on a big chunk of basalt some 1.2 miles offshore. It was deactivated in 1957 and in 1980 was sold to a private party and became the Eternity at Sea Columbarium. After interring about 30 urns, it's license was revoked in 1999. Today it is a seabird nesting area with those 30 honorary lighthouse keepers urns still in the lighthouse.

2016-07-24: Oregon Coast

Highway 101 along the Oregon Coast is rather narrow and windy but in my estimation is one of the most beautiful in the country.

2016-07-25: Face Rock

Bandon By The Sea is one of the quaintest coast towns. Usually when we're here in October we get to see the harvesting of the cranberries but alas we're way too early this year. We did take some time to drive the scenic route which took us through old town and along the drive of named seastacks. Face Rock has been my favorite for many years now.

2016-07-25: Coquille Lighthouse

Coquille Lighthouse was first lit in 1895 to guide mariners past the dangerous shifting sandbars into the Coquille River to Bandon Harbor. It is of American Colonial architecture and stands 40-feet tall. It was deactivated in 1939.
